The spring warbler migration should be well under way when we head for Roger and Lee Dane’s Edisto Farm, 2400 acres along the South Edisto River along the Fall Line. The planned walks will take us along the South Edisto River itself, through an old hardwood bottom, and up through a variety of habitats, from open fields and old field succession to pine savannas and brushy edges. In the bottom land, we could see Hooded and Prothonotary Warblers, Louisiana Water Thrushes, Redstarts, Flycatchers and Indigo Buntings, woodpeckers, thrushes and more. Above, we can expect Yellow Bellied Chats, Wood Peewees, and Thrashers, among other species. The last time we walked the farm, we saw over 60 species. We will hope for another great day of birding.
Because this trip is co-sponsored by the Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society, we will be accompanied by a cadre of expert birders who will be prepared to call in whatever neotropical migrants are in the area.
We will meet in the open area behind the McDonald’s at Exit 22 off I-20, where it meets with Highway #1 (York Street) at 7:45 am. Bring a lunch and drinks. And for those with energy to spare, there will be another walk after lunch to another area of the farm.
Bring binoculars, cameras, bug spray, sun, screen, comfortable shoes (that you don’t mind getting wet, as there may be puddles in the bottom land) and layered clothing. And don’t forget that lunch and drinks.
